Known to the locals as ‘Musi-oa-Tunya’ – the
smoke that thunders, Victoria Falls is one of the world’s greatest
waterfalls. Both majestic and awesome, the falls attract thousands
of visitors every year to witness the breathtaking beauty of this
mile long curtain of water.
Nowhere is the force of nature so powerful than on the banks of the
Zambezi River in northern Zimbabwe. The strong force of the water plunges
over the mile long precipice into the narrow gorge below, showering
the rain forest opposite, and those who dare to venture forth with
their cameras. With so many perfect vantage points, frequent rainbows
and a number of different individual falls, the area is a photographers
dream.
The falls is supported by a vibrant resort town, which has become
one of Africa’s busiest destinations. Ever since doctor Livingstone
first stumbled on the falls in 1855, the locals have been hospitably
receiving visitors and now the town boasts more than a dozen world
class hotels, stunning African theme safari lodges, several golf courses,
a craft village full of delightful African crafts, as well as plentiful
restaurants, adventure companies and tour operators.
In recent years Victoria Falls has also re-invented itself as an adventure
destination, largely due to the near perfect white water rafting run
in the gorge that exits the falls. Several companies offer safe, exciting
options for this ‘must do’ activity. You can also bungee
jump off the awe-inspiring Victoria Falls bridge, plunging 111m into
the gorge below. If adventure is not your thing, then you can simply
relax beside the pool and soak up some African sun.
Within two hours drive of the falls is the bountiful Hwange Game Reserve,
one of Africa’s largest and best preserved. Victoria Falls has
its own international airport with connections to Harare and Johannesburg.
There is also access to camps of the Okavango Delta in Botswana.

Tamba Africa recommends:
Touring the falls: guided tours of the falls and the rainforest
are offered. Learn the history, geology, flora and fauna of this wonder
of the world. Don’t foget your rainjacket and camera.
Bungee jumping: leap off vertigo-induving Victoria Falls bridge
with a 111m bungee jump - previously the world’s highest jump.
White water rafting: experience the adrenaline rush while racing
through 18 grades four and five rapids. Experienced guides accompany
all trips and safety is a priority.

River cruises: there are many different cruises available:
breakfast cruise, lunch cruise, birdwatcher cruise, sundowners cruise,
and champagne cruises.
Elephant back safaris: Elephant Camp not only makes it possible
to view wildlife from the back of an elephant but, more importantly,
to share a day in the life of an elephant at close quarters.
Traditional tours: experience the war dances, marimba musicals
and colourful legends of ethnic Africa. Shoppers will delight at the
many cheap and beautifully hand crafted batoka mementoes of Zimbabwe.
