Zimbabwe Safaris
Bordering Botswana, Hwange National
Park is Zimbabwe's largest and best known game park. Its sheer size
means that its scenery, vegetation and game vary hugely within it
- from the open plains and Kalahari sands of the southwest, to the
Mopane forests and hills of the north.
Hwange National Park is one of Africa's finest havens for wildlife
and is home to vast herds of elephant, buffalo and zebra, and has a
very large concentration of giraffe. It is also home to many predators
and endangered species plus very large and varied birdlife. Herds roam
freely across the plains and are easily spotted by car, look a little
harder and you may pick out a pride of lions or catch a cheetah chasing
his dinner. Access to the park is open to public vehicles, although
game walks and drives can be arranged with experienced guides who know
which watering holes are popular with the animals.

All Zimbabwe's specially protected animals are found in Hwange and
it is the only protected area where gemsbok and brown hyena occur in
reasonable numbers. The population of wild dog here is thought to be
of one of the largest surviving groups in Africa today.
The campsites within the park are remote and exclusive, with toilet
facilities, hot showers and dining areas, in order to ensure privacy
and an authentic wilderness experience. The park is also in close
proximity to Victoria Falls, 120kms north. Private reserves border
the park and enlarge the area dedicated to wildlife.

The 300km long Kariba Dam is the third largest man made reservoir in
the world, created by damming the mighty Zambezi River. Today the dam
is one of Zimbabwe's premier recreational areas, providing excellent
fishing opportunities fringed by wilderness areas.
The southern shore includes the remote Matusadona National Park, an
exceptional park for game viewing, boasting the second highest lion
concentration in Africa and some of the last free roaming black rhino.
Since the animals find quality grazing and adequate water on the shores
of the lake, the game viewing is spectacular. Here guests will get
the best of the Lake Kariba water based activities, coupled with great
wildlife experiences on dry land within the park.
Mana Pools on the southern bank of the Zambezi River is one of southern
Africa's top walking safari destinations, in addition, there isn't
a river in the world that offers the big game, wilderness location
and adventure that you'll find here on the border between Zimbabwe
and Zambia.
The main focus here is the tranquil Zambezi River; its open floodplain;
Chikwenya Island and the wonderful wildlife, which lives in Mana Pools.
This rich and wild heritage is a photographer's paradise with the mountains
of the rift valley providing the backdrop.
The area is renowned for its large numbers of elephant, buffalo, hippo,
lions, crocodiles and eland, which concentrate along the river when
the waterholes inland dry up during the winter months. Herds of Buffalo
graze along the river's edges and elephant love the Albida forests.
Leopards are common, although they are not seen as often as lion. Bird
life is superb and many species are found here.

Tamba Africa recommends:
Game drives: this activity is central to all camps and safaris. The vehicles
are open with a maximum of 7-8 guests per vehicle and occur at dawn and dusk
when the game is least hidden. Experienced, armed guides ensure a successful
andsafe game spotting experience.

Night drives: in certain areas trips in safari vehicles are taken after dark. This offers you an opportunity to experience some of the nocturnal mammals and birds, which are only very rarely encountered during the day.
Houseboat safaris: the Matusadona safaris are by houseboat, which is essentially a floating private hotel. This gives you the opportunity to relax on deck with a drink, soak up the sun and tranquillity or to go fishing, bird watching or game viewing by tender boat.
Fishing: some camps offer fishing as an activity where catch
and release practices are encouraged. Fishermen have good opportunities
to catch tiger fish, Africa's best sporting fish.
Guided walks: Zimbabwe is famous for walking safaris in its national parks – which are some of the best destinations in Africa in which to participate in this. In Hwange these are conducted in a dedicated 400 km2 walking area that is also an intensively protected rhino sanctuary.
Bird watching: the greatest number of birds may be seen between October and March, when the central African migrants are present. Endemic species will be seen throughout the year.
Tracking: following black rhino, elephant, buffalo and lion on foot is one of Africa's most exhilarating experiences.
Tours: visits to traditional villages in the nearby tribal area are also available.
