A trip to South Africa would not be complete without time for some wildlife viewing and many visitors come to South Africa to see the big five. There are also hundreds of bird species infesting the many forests, bushveld and grasslands; and small animals like the cute bushbaby, the curious meerkat and the ubiquitous dassie providing sights just as interesting as the big ones.

The typical African bushveld, with its tangled coastal forests, rolling grasslands, wide open spaces of desert and semi-desert supports, all these wonderful birds, and beasts with its unparalleled botanical richness.

The Kruger National Park offers a wildlife experience that ranks with the best in Africa. Truly the flagship of the South African national parks, Kruger is home to an impressive number of species. There is plenty of evidence here of man’s interaction with the lowveld environment over many centuries - from bushman rock paintings to majestic archaeological sites like Masorini and Thulamela.

Addo Elephant park
, a huge reserve about 45 minutes from Port Elizabeth, is excellent for seeing large herds of elephants. The park also offers fantastic viewing of black rhino, Cape buffalo, a host of other large and small mammals, and over 400 species of birds in the greater park area.

In the private reserve of Shamwari, you stand a good chance of spotting lots of different wildlife on the early morning and evening game drives in the reserve's open safari vehicles. Famous for its rhino conservation programme and big five sightings, Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Park is the largest of KwaZulu-Natal’s reserves and boasts a fantastic cross section of wildlife. Ndumo Game Reserve is considered by many to be the finest bird watching locality in South Africa, with over 400 species recorded.

Tswalu Kalahari Reserve is situated in the northern cape province of South Africa, at the foot of the Korannaberg Mountains. Tswalu prides itself on its great conservation efforts with animal numbers growing in this completely natural habitat. The Madikwe Reserve, bordering Botswana, offers a superb bush experience with 75,000 hectors of ‘big five’ territory in a malaria free area.

At the foot of the Warmwaterberg, in the heart of the Little Karoo, lies the Sanbona Wildlife Reserve. This reserve offers miles of undulating mountains and plains, indigenous fauna and flora, rock formations and rock art, making it a destination not to be missed.

Tamba Africa recommends:

4x4 safaris: most game reserves offer game drives in open back vehicles, accompanied by an experienced guide or tracker. This ncreases your chances of spotting the big five, and brings you into close contact with the animals.

Walking safaris: seeing big animals from the security of a safari vehicle is pretty exciting, but it is nothing compared to standing deep in the bush, miles from the nearest road and vehicle, getting a close up view of a black rhino. All walking safaris are undertaken under the direct supervision of armed rangers and trackers and no unnecessary risks are taken.

Night safaris: experience the African bush at night, with the sounds of lions on the hunt, owls whooping and the chatter of hungry scavengers looking for the remains of a kill.

Ballooning: game viewing flights are taken over Pilanesberg game reserve, near Sun City for a truly exhilarating bird's eye view of the African Savannah.

Elephant back safaris: Kapama offers elephant back safaris for guests, accommodated in any one of their three luxurious bush camps: Kapama Lodge, Buffalo Camp or Nyala House (situated in the Kapama private nature reserve, just outside Kruger National Park). This dream-like adventure offers magical moments as well as the opportunity to come into close contact with other wildlife.
