Washed by the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, KwaZulu-Natal with its subtropical coastline, sweeping savannah, game parks and magnificent Drakensberg mountain range, caters for every taste imaginable. Known as the kingdom of the Zulu, there are many fascinating cultural imprints and reminders of a dynamic interaction between African, European and Indian cultures.

The gateway to this unique holiday destination is the sophisticated and cosmopolitan harbour city of Durban. This tourist friendly city boasts a multi cultural population, a pulsating nightlife, and warm watered beaches – an ideal launch pad for unforgettable journeys into surrounding areas.

The province boasts two World Heritage Sites – the greater St Lucia Wetland Park and the Ukhahlamba Drakensberg Park. Known to the Zulus as the `barrier of spears’, the Drakensberg mountain range is truly spectacular, boasting the highest mountain range in South Africa and is often referred to as little Switzerland.

The estuary of Lake St Lucia is an eco tourism wonderland of beautiful lakes, swamps, forests and marshlands. This area was declared South Africa’s first World Heritage Site – and is no doubt one of the most beautiful wetland areas in the world and the biggest in the Southern Hemisphere. Dukuduku and Kosi Bay have unspoilt indigenous coastal forests, and countless species of animals including hippo, crocodiles and elephant, are found in this abundant sub tropical eco system.

Some of South Africa’s best beaches can be found along the Natal coastline, namely Umhlanga Rocks, Ballito, Shaka’s Rock, Shelley Beach (on the North Coast), Uvongo and Margate (on the South coast) – to mention just a few. These beaches offer safe swimming and fantastic surfing possibilities. Durban also boasts spectacular beaches including Addington Beach, South and North beaches and Dairy beach. It is also the home of major international surfing and beach sport competitions.

Tamba Africa recommends:

Game Viewing: Ndumo game reserve offers nature walks and drives through forests of fig trees and the surrounding bush. Drives in open 4x4 vehicles to Black Rock, the Hippo Pools and the various scenic pans are a highlight. Hluhluwe -Umfolozi Park is in close proximity to Durban, and offers some exhilarating game viewing.

Fishing:
the south coast sees the incredible annual migration of sardines, where shoals of fish can be seen in their feeding frenzy as they move towards Mozambique. The sardine run is always followed by dolphins, sharks and game fish, and brave deep sea divers. Sodwana is famous for big-game fishing.

Hiking: the Drakensberg Mountains have spectacular waterfalls, mountain peaks and rock faces adorned with ancient San rock art, making it a favourite spot for hiking and fly fishing.

Cultural tours: a number of battlefield tours are on offer where some of South Africa's most turbulent wars took place. The interior, north of the Tugela River, marks the spot of major battles between the Boers, British and Zulus.

Drives: one of the most picturesque drives in the world is just 45km from Durban, known as the 'Valley of a Thousand Hills'. It is in these hills where Zulu people still live in their traditional huts and the views are breathtaking.

Diving / snorkeling: situated offshore is the Maputaland Marine Reserve, which offers extraordinary diving, and snorkelling encounters with huge shoals of fish, dolphins and whales. Sodwana also offers some of the best diving and snorkelling opportunities in South Africa - a veritable mecca for those who love underwater adventure.
