Mozambique Coastal Towns
The charming coastal city of Inhambane, situated on the shores
of a sheltered bay, is the capital city of the Inhambane province
– in southern Mozambique. This quaint city, steeped in history,
was an important harbour where Union Castle ships docked during the
days of passenger liners. The cathedrals, old colonial Portuguese
architecture, African culture and local market places all make it
a fascinating town to browse around. Traditional dhows are a characteristic
sight on the 24km long bay, which is a waterway to some 200 vessels.
Pemba, northern Mozambique’s premier resort town, lies along the shores
of the Baia de Pemba. With a length of 17km and width of 12km, Baia de Pemba
ranks as one of the largest inland bays in the world. Take a stroll around the
modern town; the old town in the vicinity of the harbour; or the reed and thatch
village with its dhow harbour. The most popular beach, Praia de Wimbe, lies along
the sweeping curve of the bay. This idyllic beach is protected by a coral reef,
200m off shore, creating safe swimming and beautiful snorkelling.

The Quirimbas archipelago consists of 32 coral islands stretching from Pemba
to the Rovuma river, which forms the natural frontier between Tanzania and Mozambique.
The area has never been developed and remains an unexplored tourist paradise.
There are various beaches around the island, with hundreds of seashells due to
the high biodiversity of the inter-tidal zone.
Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, lies alongside the estuary of the Rio Esperito
and Baia de Maputo in the far south of the country. The city, with its wide avenues
lined with red acacia and lilac jacaranda flowering trees, offers the tourist
innumerable historical, cultural and scenic spots. Ponta do Ouro, an unforgettable
holiday spot a few hours drive from Maputo, offers unspoilt beaches and lush
coastal vegetation. This bay is famous for its spectacular scuba diving and is
a safe haven for visitors to swim with the dolphins.
Tamba Africa recommends:
Sport fishing: the Pemba region is one of the best fishing hot spots in the world. The main focus is on the Quirimbas Archipelago.
Ocean safaris: are offered by Barra Lodge, during this trip you are almost guaranteed to see humpback whales, whale sharks and possibly mantarays, even the elusive dugong between the months of June to October.
Scuba diving: Barra Lodge has a fully equipped dive centre with all necessary facilities. Resort, open water 1 and advanced courses are on offer. There are a number of reefs, some close pinnacles and some further away.

Mangrove walks: adjacent to Barra lodge is the saltwater mangrove with crystal clear waters, here you can explore by boat or foot.
Quad bikes: take a long tour through the local plantations visiting secluded beaches.
Cultural tours: Maputo has several museums and other places of interest. The Natural History Museum, housed in a gothic style building, is highly recommended. Other places of interest include the Tunduro Gardens, the railway station and the fortress (one of the oldest buildings in Maputo).
