The Okavango is a unique ecosystem -
situated in the middle of the largest stretch of continuous sand in
the world, the Kalahari basin. This wetland lies like an oasis in
this otherwise inhospitable landscape and the vegetation is lush and
varied, attracting a host of wildlife.
Being the world’s largest inland delta, it covers an enormous
area with the Okavango River rising in the Angolan uplands flowing
south into Botswana. Nearing the end of its journey it spreads itself
out into a huge expanse of waterways, one of the natural wonders of
Africa. This is a magical place with lazy lagoons, palm fringed islands
and wide waterways with a dense mantle of water lilies.

This water wonderland attracts an enormous amount of game and the
Moremi Game Reserve, situated in the eastern corner of the Delta,
now has a large concentration of wildlife. Located in an area well
known for its herds of elephants, North Gate is sited perfectly on
the banks of the Khwai River.
Central and southern Okavango is largely inaccessible and unpopulated,
stretching from the permanent wetlands in the north to the dry woodlands
of Chiefs Island, where you can watch huge herds of game among the
grassy plains. Some of the finest privately owned safari camps and
lodges in the Africa are found here, offering extreme luxury in idyllic
settings. Access to most of these camps and lodges is by small charter
aircraft offering a bird’s eye view of the Delta.
Tamba Africa recommends:
Mokoro trips: the mokoro, a traditional dugout canoe, is the main source of transport in the Delta. Most camps and lodges offer Mokoro trips, which are ideal for gliding through quiet pools and experiencing the wildlife close-up.
Walking safaris: nature walks with experienced guides are offered on the many interesting islands of the Delta.
Fishing: the waters of the Okavango offer a wide variety of fish species, many of which have unique physical adaptations to this wetland area. Fishing in the summer months will produce bream (tilapia) and tiger fish for a lucky few. Shakawe, a small village on the banks of the Okavango, is one of the best game fishing spots in Southern Africa.
Elephant back riding: guests at Abu Camp are invited to experience
the ultimate game viewing safari by elephant. This is an ideal way
to approach and mingle undetected with herds of wild animals.

Bird watching: many resident and migratory waterbirds can be seen along the river including kingfishers, herons, bee-eaters, spoonbills and the endangered African skimmer. Huge numbers of breeding storks and herons are also attracted to the world-famous heronries.
African horseback safaris: are offered at Macatoo Camp, situated
in the western portion of the Okavango delta. Much of the riding is
game viewing and done at a walk - interspaced by trots and exhilarating
canters across the flood plains.
